Vouchers at Sundancer, Nairn

We want to be extremely transparent with you regarding our position regarding gift vouchers.

By way of background, we acquired the lease of the business from the landlords in March this year after the previous company went into liquidation. At no point was the business bought, this was a fresh lease. We have no affiliation with the previous company or its directors.

While we were aware that there were gift vouchers in circulation, we were not at any point passed any of the monies collected from the sale of these vouchers. In most circumstances like this, the new tenant would simply announce that all vouchers are invalid and point the guest to the liquidator.

As we are aware that the likelihood of anyone receiving any kind of reimbursement in this manner is slim, we decided that we would honour the vouchers we had been made aware of, and for which records exist.

To date, we have honoured in excess of £30,000 of vouchers for which the full cost has been borne by ourselves.

Since then, we have been presented with a number of different style vouchers for which we have no records, and that appear to have been bought online. We have no way of verifying their validity, nor do we have any way of knowing how many types there are, or what the value of the outstanding ones are.

As I am sure you can imagine, the pressure of honouring the original vouchers is high, especially given the economic climate in which we are operating. Costs are higher than they have ever been, and being able to make a profit is a challenging task. When you consider that on top of this, there is an unknown amount of vouchers out there, if we were to honour every voucher that came in, quite frankly there wouldn’t be a business left to accept them.

So, as we have records of paper vouchers, which are generally handwritten, we are happy to continue to accept these at our expense so long as they are both in date and appear on the records provided to us by the previous company.

For all other vouchers, there are 2 options moving forward that we would recommend to try and ensure that you don’t find yourself out of pocket

Section 75

Contact the provider of the card that you used to purchase the voucher. In most cases, they will be able to raise a “chargeback” as goods have not been provided.
